GM Erwin L'Ami to open the tournament with a simultaneous exhibition

In just over two weeks, the annual chess festival in Vlissingen will begin once again. Excluding the two COVID years, this will be the 30th consecutive year that the Stichting Schaak Walcheren has organized an international chess tournament in Vlissingen during the summer. The organizing team has plenty of experience by now, but the event is always exciting—especially this year, as we are moving to a new venue after 27 editions at HZ University of Applied Sciences. The tournament will now be held at Scheldemond College. One reassuring piece of news is that the tournament is completely sold out. While the playing venue is new, almost everything else remains the same. As in previous years, the color draw for board one will be done on the evening before the tournament, accompanied by a simultaneous exhibition. This year, the simultaneous exhibition will be given by GM Erwin L'Ami, who will certainly get plenty of steps in as he takes on a large number of enthusiastic chess players. Last year, Erwin finished tied for first place in our tournament but had to concede the tournament title to GM Pavel Eljanov on tiebreak (Sonneborn-Berger) points. As some consolation—apart from sharing the prize money equally—Erwin did win their individual encounter in impressive style.
